Term Two.

This term we will be investigating the circumstances that lead to someone becoming a hero. We will be looking at this through the context of natural disasters such as volcanoes and earthquakes.


Technology/Maths Unit

WALT design for a specific purpose.
SC: Think about purpose:
- the user
- functionality – how will it work?
- look and style
Your mission is to design and then build an earthquake-proof building.
You will have

46 toothpicks
4 pegs
2 sheets of paper
2m of Sellotape
a small blob of blutack

These are the building requirements:

  • Model must be at least 50cm in height and be able to fit on an A4 piece of card – 50 points
  • Model must have at least 2 level stories clearly identifiable – 50 points
  • Model must be earthquake proof. If your building survives the shaking at each level you will get points:
A 3.5 Richter scale shake will get you 20 points
A 6.5 Richter scale shake will get you 40 points
A 9 Richter scale shake will get you 60 points

  • Points will be given for originality and style – 10 to 40 points

Maximum score possible is 200 points.


Draw some designs neatly in your book and label them. Plan what materials (and how much) you will use.
Decide on the best design or use parts of all designs. Who will do what when building?
